The Trabant was East Germany's answer to the West Germany's popular Beetle. The Trabant P50, also was known as Trabant 500 and was the first plastic car in the world. It was in 1957, that the Director of VEB Plasta, Rolf Weichert combined phenol, aniline, formaldehyde with cotton fibres to form a plastic called 'Trabiplast'.
Rest is history as over 37 lakh cars were produced between 1957-1990. It had a 3-4 years waiting list and had an average lifespan of 30 years.
