The idea to have a people's car had been raging in the early 30's among labour unions. There was also additional pressure from Adolf Hitler to create a vehicle that will carry 2 adults and 3 children at 100 km/hr. It was in 1936 that Volkswagen (pronounced FOX-waag-EN) was formed.
Their first product was the Volkswagen Beetle and was a runaway success. It was also the largest produced car in the universe.
Volkswagen or VW went on to produce some iconic vehicles such as the Karmann Ghia, Samba van, Golf, Polo, Passat, Jetta, etc.
In India, VW started making cars since 2007 at the Chakan Plant near Pune.
