DKW (pronounced DEE-Ka-WEE) was started by Jørgen Rasmussen, a Danish who started his factory making steam fittings at Zschopau in Germany.

In 1919, he made a 2-stroke toy engine and named it Des Knaben Wunsch (“ the boy s desire" in German) or DKW. In 1930, the company was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.

They created few world famous products until it became part of the Auto Union (Audi). The factory on the East German side was re-badged as MZ and continued making motorcycles.
