Caroline Ryan Foulke was the granddaughter of the founder of the American Tobacco Company (owner of brands such as Lucky Strike cigarettes) and extremely rich. Be it jewellery from van Cleef and Arpels or Harry Winston watches, everything was tailored made for her.
In 1956, she wanted a station wagon that could take her luggage to her yacht. While speaking with her friend standing besides a Mercedes-Benz showroom, her friend suggested that she buy a tailor made Mercedes as the manufacturer didn’t make vehicles to suit her taste. He recommended Binz GmbH & Co. who were specialists in converting cars in to hearses and ambulances. She decided to buy a W186 model and hand it over for modifications.
BINZ company modified the exterior by removing standard tail lights and replacing it with lights from a 190SL Mercedes. It had rear seats that were made of expensive leather, that could fold. Red colour was selected for carpeting as it matched the colour of her yacht interior. The exterior had to be a colour that was special – dove-grey.
