Universal is the nick name given to a modified stationwagon or estate version of Mercedes-Benz 230S. These stationwagons were never built in the original factory but by coachbuilders such as Binz, IMA and even Miessen.
The height of this car was about 3.5 cm more than the conventional saloon 230. They also weighed about 100 kg. more. These mostly were used as hearses and ambulances and was expensive by nearly US$ 6000 (Rs. 4 lakh) over the 230S.
Of all of them, it was only IMA the coachbuilder from Belgium who made 2000 of these out of the initial 5000 planned.
