In 1936, Daimler-Benz started the VEB Industriewerke of Ludwigsfeld (IWL) in Berlin to make aircraft engines. Over 10,000 prisoners were employed in the plant. But the factory was severely bombed during the World War. With several employees out of jobs, the Co. went ahead to make the first scooters in 1954.
IWL created several iconic scooters such as the Pitty, Wiesel, Berlin and the Troll.
