The legendary John Greenwood first introduced his wide-bodied Chevrolet Corvette C3 car at the Detroit Automobile Show in 1974.

His design with a fibreglass body helped him to take advantage of downforce. The extended wide fenders at the rear had slightly angled surfaces that were vented to reduce lift caused by air that is trapped below the chassis.

In the 70s with the beginning of Oil crisis, sponsors were reluctant to sponsor any car races so participation thinned down. In the same period the French government asked John Greenwood to participate in the famed Le Mans 24hours racing. They even paid US$ 50,000 for this.

So Greenwood renamed his car as the Spirit of Le Mans and adorned it with French and American flags. It was numbered 76 to commemorate Americas Bicentennial and did a constant 350 km/hr. His car ran all night until at 8 am, next morning one of the tyre burst therefore forcing the car to retire. But by this time, this car already made history.
