Zündapp (pronounced Zoon-DAAP) or Zuendapp who made world famous motorcycles wanted to try their hands making cars.
And so in 1954 they ask aircraft maker Dornier (Dornier planes are used by the Indian Navy) to design a small microcar. So the first car they make is called Delta. After several modifications including use of an engine immobiliser, 12 volt electrical system, MacPherson suspensions and a single cylinder engine with 245cc the car is evolved as the JANUS.
What was unique about these microcars was that it gave easy access in to the car from both sides and this was immensely appreciated by tall Germans. The two rows of seats could easily be folded to make a bed and several luxury features were provided. Because of this, its cost was higher than the BMW Isetta and the Heinkel cabin therefore making its production unviable after some period of time. About 7000 of these were produced for just one year.
