In 1964, Yamaha developed the RD 05 to compete with a popular Honda 250 cc model. The new V4 engine used a rotary disc valve and every possible effort was made to make the engine light weight for racing.
It made its debut in the 1965 GP. The Prince of Speed, Phil Read rode this bike and won the title in the 250 cc class championship.
