Produced in communist East Germany, the Wartburg 311 with a 1.0-litre engine was a very popular car that was also exported to the UK as well as NATO West Germany. Until 1965, over 2.8 lakh cars were produced.
For some time, this same car model was produced with a different chassis, i.e., the Wartburg 353, which was labelled as the Wartburg 312. And people preferred the Wartburg 312 with its 900 cc engine as it had a smoother experience than its predecessor, i.e. the Wartburg 311.
