After the popular model Amazon entered its fourth year of production, Volvo felt the need to release a new model, so Volvo decided to go for a boxy-shaped car with a more stylish front grille. Production began in 1967 with the 140 Series.
Volvo renamed the car, giving it a Mercedes-Benz type nomenclature, i.e., the model name identified the type and class of vehicle. In this case, the Volvo 144 meant a car that was the first series production car (1) with a 4-cylinder engine (4) and a 4-door car (4). This model became so popular that they were produced in Sweden, Belgium, South Africa, Canada, Australia, and Malaysia.
The 144 was a very popular car among taxi drivers in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden.
