The year 1980 was the best for Volkswagen. It was her only win in 18 years with the help of a new SUV called the Iltis (also called Volkswagen Type 183) at the Paris-DAKAR Rally. Four vehicles of the same type entered the race.
The SUV's were overhauled completely with a new 1.7 litre engine that gave about 110 hp power and the 4-wheel traction was borrowed from the sister firm, Audi.
The first was driven by Freddy Kottulinsky who was a test driver for Audi. The second Iltis was driven by Jean Ragnotti, that had a modified 5-cylinder engine (2.1 liters for 160 hp). The third vehicle was driven Patrick Zaniroli whose idea it was to enter the competition and the last was driven by a famous person who at one time was the Director of Audi Sports - Robert Gumpert (who later went to start a racing car brand Gumpert).
The race was won by Kottulinsky who took the 1st place in the podium along with co-pilot Gerd Löffelmann. They were followed by Patrick Zaniroli along with Philippe Colesse who stood 2nd on the podium. In the 4th place was Jean Ragnotti along with Georges Vaills. All the 4 entries completed the race (Robert Gumpert came in the 9th position).
