Also known as GAZ 21, the Volga M21 was developed on the instructions of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev (who visited India in the 1950’s). Khrushchev’s order to GAZ’s Chief Designer, Alexander Nevzorov, was to produce a car that would rival an American-made car.
The car was nicknamed "Volga" after the Volga River, Europe’s longest river, which flows from Central Russia to the Caspian Sea, a distance of 3500 kms.
Built with lots of influences from the earlier GAZ Pobeda, the M21 had a very high ground clearance, which meant that this car that was provided with a tough suspension could travel on rough roads. Inside the car, there were a few features that American cars provided as standard options, i.e., a cigarette lighter, an ashtray, a heater, a windscreen washer, a radio, reclining seats, etc.
Three generations of the GAZ/Volga M21 rolled out during the years 1956-1970. This scale model is a rendition of the 3rd generation Volga.
