Known for making some of the best sidecars in the two-wheeler industry, Velorex was also famous for something else.
Two brothers by the names František and Mojmír Stránský were very much impressed with Morgan (UK) 3-wheelers. So they started experimenting by releasing few 3 wheelers in the mid-forties with smaller sized 150 cc and 200 cc engines.
But what catapulted them to the top was the use of the JAWA 250 cc and later the JAWA 350 cc engine for their 3-wheel cars. Featuring a tubular space frame draped in fabric, the Velorex 16/350 tricycles with their 2-stroke, air-cooled rear mounted engine (Type 572) could transport two adults at 60 km/hr that was fraction of a cost of a new car.
This new tricycle became so much of a hit that they continued to be made from 1958 until the mid-seventies. Nearly 13,000 were produced and exported to several communist countries such as Poland, East Germany (DDR), Hungary, etc. Weighing just 350 kg, the Velorex still has a cult following.
