The T1 was the first generation van from the house of Volkswagen (VW) and was basically an idea by Bernardus Marinus, who wanted to make use of their popular people's car, the Beetle into a van for carrying goods and wares.

After 1964, when the rear door was made wider, the model was referred to as the T1c.
