Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, name any city in Brazil and ask the question – which model is the most famous Taxi here and the answer has to be Santana.
It was in 1984, that Volkswagen introduced the Santana to the Brazilian market with 2 variants – 1.8 litre and a 2.0 litre engine. The idea was to compete against the likes of Opel Diplomata and others such as Chevrolet Monza, etc.
Volkswagen took seven years and US$ 50 million to develop this model that soon became Brasil's favourite because of her low operating costs and easy availability of spares.
