The Type 3 or Typ 3 was an attempt by Volkswagen to shift the perception of the public from the Beetle (Type 1) to a newly designed model.
Having the same 4-cylinder rear-positioned engine, this Volkswagen 1500 model initially had a 1.5-litre engine (later, a 1.6-litre engine was installed). Launched during a 1961 auto show, the public soon liked this new model, but it still fell short of the numbers that the VW Beetle had achieved.
The company, in order to make the model popular, launched three variants, i.e., the VW Variant (branded as the Squareback in the USA), the Fastback, and the Notchback. Luggage spaces were created both at the front and rear for people to carry more luggage and prove its usefulness. The company also offered a Bosch-made electronic fuel injection system as a standard option.
This model was made in Germany and distant Brazil. CKDs were also shipped to Australia to be assembled there.
