The Trabant was East Germany's answer to West Germany's popular Beetle. The Trabant P50, also known as the Trabant 500, was the first plastic car in the world. It was in 1957 that the Director of VEB Plasta, Rolf Weichert, combined phenol, aniline, and formaldehyde with cotton fibres to form a plastic called 'Trabiplast'.
With a 2-cylinder, 2-stroke, 600-cc engine, this microcar from VEB Sachsenring was extremely popular and was sold to even countries in Europe such as Finland, Greece, Switzerland, etc.
Rest is history, as over 37 lakh cars were produced between 1957-1990. It had a waiting list of 3–4 years and an average lifespan of 30 years.
