Ulyanovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (UAZ) is an automobile company that has been producing vehicles since the early 1940s. The factory came up as a result of the German invasion into the Soviet Union. At first it produced military hardware before it diversifying to make automobiles. 

An off-road vehicle, the UAZ 469 is an evolution of their older GAZ 69. Powered by a 2.5 litre UMZ-452MI engine, the first vehicle rolled out in 1971.

This vehicle was easily accepted by the establishments as it could climb over any terrain and was easy to repair and maintain. With 4-speed manual transmission, this off-road vehicle was the preferred choice of the military and police forces not only in the Soviet Union but also other communist and Soviet-bloc countries. Until the 1980s this SUV was beyond the scope of civilian use.
