This model is one of the longest-running SUV models of the world. Made since 1954 when the model got this name, its history is albeit very interesting.
When the Japanese Imperial army conquered the Philippines, they found an American made Jeep (Philippines was an American colony since 1898) which they sent back to Japan to do reverse engineering. Toyota developed an SUV based on the Jeep and named it as AK and improvised it further by borrowing elements from another stolen compact truck - American made Bantam GPV (General Purpose Vehicle). Power for this new AK10 came from a Toyota model which was a 4-cylinder, 2.3 litre engine.
Since Willys (owners of the brand name Jeep) had filed a lawsuit, Toyota changed few design features and renamed it as the Toyota Land Cruiser in 1954.
This model is the Land Cruiser AX G which is a development of the earlier 100 series Land Cruiser platform. Launched in 2007, it shares the same platform as Lexus (Toyota’s luxury car brand) LX570 and the frame was borrowed from the American made Toyota Tundra. This model happened to be the most favourite for government diplomats, UN and NATO personnel.
This model is also sold as Toyota Roraima in Venezuela and produced in Japan and China.
