This is a unique truck with a ‘Backbone Chassis’ in which the rectangular cross-section joins the front and the rear suspension attachment area. Because of her torsional stiffness and the process to make the structure, these vehicles are more expensive to build but it is the ideal design for multi-axle vehicles such as the Tatra 813 Kolos - 8 x 8 is one.
With a powerful Tatra made T930E V12 17.5 litre engine, this truck can pull up to 65 tons of load. Not just that, it's engine has multi-fuel capability i.e. can be used with petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, etc. With a capability of climbing a height of 2 feet with a 30° lateral tilt, no other large size truck can compete with this model.
Nearly 12,000 of these were produced for 15 years and several were exported abroad to COMECON (Communist countries). Few of these were also supplied to the Indian military.
