Rover 3500 SD1 – Standard 2000 Scale - 1:18

The ROVER SD1 project’s aim was to provide a 5 door super car that will transport corporate executives. SD means Specialist Division and was the brainwork two persons - Spen King and David Bache. The number 1 was attached as it was their first in-house project. The challenge was to replace the Rover P6 model with something more economical.

Though the project commenced in 1971, by the time they were first produced it was already 1976. By 1982, it was named 2000 as it carried a 2000 cc engine borrowed from the Rover Sherpa van.

The same was produced in India by Standard Motors, Chennai (then Madras) and launched in the summer of 1985 as the Standard 2000. But the only difference was David Bache used a 1948 Standard Vanguard engine inside the SD1 body. At a price of Rs. 2 lakh plus, this car was the most expensive car those days and came with air-conditioning as a standard feature, a luxury those days.
