Renault, for a long time, was seeking to plug the gap between their popular utility vehicle called the Juvaquatre and the Renault 1000 / Renault 1500 kg vans. This lead to the creation of their new Colorale and her several variants such as light duty truck, pick-up and large size family car. The family car models were named Savane (3-door) and the Prairie (5-door).
Of all the models, the Colorale Prairie was their best selling model. This car could accommodate 6 people and yet have a large cargo space.
This particular scale model is a rendition of long-distance taxis that were owned by a firm called Compagnie Générale Transsaharienne (CGT) who used to drive people from Algiers (Algeria) to other border states of Francophone (French-speaking) African countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali and Mauritania.
