The founder of ALPINE (Sports division of Renault) was Jean Redele who was a racing driver, automotive designer and a manufacturer.
He converted the simple Renault 4CV in to his specially designed race car and named it Speciale. Built in Italy, designed by the world famous Giovanni Michelotti (who designed several Ferrari, Maserati, Standard Triumph, BMW cars) in the year 1955, this car with a 750cc engine, having a 5 speed gear box won the Mille Miglia race in 1955.
Driven by Maurice Michy and Julliet Gaultier, this car came in the 1st position in the 750cc category. It was also in the same race that Stirling Moss drove in his Mercedes-Benz 300SLR.
