The directive given to the Renault Design team was very clear – develop an economical car that should fill the gap between Renault 8 and Renault 16, have a large boot, spacious interior and several interchangeable parts that could be manufactured in any part of the world. With these points in mind, the team developed the Renault 12 (then codenamed Project 117). The year was 1963
The car was so much of a success that the model was produced for the next 12 years in countries as distant as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, New Zealand, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Portugal and Venezuela, besides home country France. Over 25 lakh units were made (2.5 million).
The Renault 12 Alpine or the R12 Alpine was a sports version with a 1.4 litre engine. The power output that stood at 108 hp, gave it a top speed of 175 km/hr. Nearly 500 units of this model were produced during the years 1978-1980.
