Frenchmen René Metge, well-known rally driver (winner of three Paris-Dakar rally’s) teamed up with sports journalist Bernard Giroux to drive the Range Rover V8 at the 1981 and the 3rd edition of the Paris-Dakar Rally (this race was historic as it was in this race that the first and only Rolls-Royce also took part).
This Range Rover was specially tuned up for the race by another race driver Tom Walkinshaw. Tom who ran his firm Tom Walkinshaw Racing Ltd (TWR) made sure to tune-up the machine for the 10,000 km. gruelling desert race. This eventually led the SUV to win the race. The team was sponsored by VSD, a well-known French celebrity and leisure magazine.
