Built primarily for sports racing the Porsche 962C was a replacement for the earlier 956. About 16 of these cars were used by the factory for competitions while another 75 were made for private customers.
This car will never be forgotten for one reason - At the 1986 edition of the 24 hours Le Mans held at the Circuit de la Sarthe, the Porsche Kremer Racing Team that had Kunimitsu Takahashi (Japan), Sarel Daniel van der Merwe (South Africa) and Josef Gartner (Austrian) as team members had a very disappointing news after finishing 169 laps.
Josef Gartner’s Porsche that was doing the Mulsanne Straight stretch (a 6 km straight stretch and known as Ligne Droite des Hunaudières, in French) at a speed of almost 300 km/hr in pitch dark suddenly crashed into the barrier because of some mechanical failure. It somersaulted down the track, hitting first a telephone pole and then rolling down the slope before the car catches fire. Gartner was killed because of a broken neck in this terrible accident. The Porsche Kremer Team had to withdraw from the race.
