It was in the summer of 1986 that Porsche's President Peter Schutz launched the first prototype of the 911 Speedster. It was his personal idea that fructified in to a cabriolet with no top and a removable windscreen.
Few months after a second prototype was launched that was based on the Porsche 911SC cabriolet with lower height windscreen.
The final Speedster was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show of 1987 and had a hood that was lighter and when rolled down could be hidden under a fibreglass cover. This breakthrough design was termed ?sensational? by automotive journalists, then.
