Opel who were sewing machine and bicycle manufacturers felt the need to develop an automobile. So they ask Friedrich Leopold Christoph Lutzmann, an entrepreneur and a designer to create one. So with minimum number of employees, Lutzmann went on to create the first car for Opel in 1899 that was named as Opel Patent Motorwagen.
With a 1.5 litre engine, this light-weight car (it did not make use of the wrought-iron) moved at 20 km/hr. This car was also popularly known as ‘Lutzmann System’.
In three years until 1901, about 60 were produced.
