During the start of the 80's, every global manufacturer had to be a part of every major rally around the world. All the European majors had their strongest contenders lined up for racing. Audi with their Quattro, Lancia, Peugeot and so on.
Opel developed the Manta 400, for the same reason. On 1st May, 1983 they got the official permission to participate in their first rally. That race was in Corsica in Italy in the Group B category. And so began the story of Manta 400 participating along with their own Ascona in every race.
But the Opal Manta had a big edge over the Opel Ascona 400 model. As it was covered with Kevlar (a DuPont product that is used for making bullet-proof jackets since it is strong and lighter) body panels it gave advantage of being lighter by over 80 kgs.
