A third generation model of the original Kadett, the German made Opel Kadett C is a small family car that was launched in 1973. This car model is so popular that it was produced in West germany (then) and Belgium and sold as the Holden Gemini (Australia), Chevrolet Chevette (Brazil), Vauxhall Chevette (UK), Daewoo Maepsy (South Korea), Isuzu Gemini (Japan) and the Buick Opel (USA).
The GT/E version of the car was developed in 1975 for racing and was a result to competitor Volkswagen Golf GTI model. With an engine that gave up to 113 hp, the car had vertically mounted Bilstein gas shock absorbers.
The Safari Rally (originally known as East African Rally) is one of the oldest rally’s of Africa that covers three countries – Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. In the 1976 edition of the rally conducted between 15-19th April, 1976, 64 participants were expected to cover a distance of nearly 5000 kms. The car models that took part were from Opel, Lancia, Ford, Datsun, Peugeot, etc. Notable participants in the race were Joginder Singh Bhachu* (Flying Sikh), Chandrashekhar (Shekhar) Mehta and Sandro Munari. It was Joginder Singh Bhachu (Kenya) along with Kenyan co-driver David Doig who won this race driving a Mitsubishi Colt Lancer.
This particular car belonging to the Euro Händler Team was driven by Walter Röhrl and co-pilot Claes Billstam had participated in this race. Having a large bull bar, this powerful car that was specially tuned by tuning expert Irmscher completed the race and came 4th in the race.
