Oldsmobile was a General Motors Company brand that had been in operation since 1908. design team was led by none other than the world-famous Harley Earl.
In the 1950's, when the world was looking up towards the sky, efforts were made to send the first rockets into space and also to make people go into outer space. In short, the early drawings of rockets influenced the design of the automobile. GM and the team under Harley Earl were also making concept cars that imbibed elements from these human designed projectiles. So, taking a cue from an aircraft called the Chance Vought F7U Cutlass, this concept car evolved in 1954, just in time for the GM Motorama show.
Using the Oldsmobile Rocket V8 engine, its fibreglass body sat on the chassis of a Chevrolet Corvette . With a 4-speed Hydra-Matic transmission, the Cutlass look was of a rocket in motion with pointed tail fins at the rear that appeared like a long machete. The huge chrome finished radiator grille converged towards the underbody, giving the feeling of a glider. While the inside had swivel-turning front seats, the outside had a copper-tone colour, which, according to the design team, was the best colour for any car.
