This breakthrough design evolved in 1964 when Neoplan's (coach builders') founder's son decided to have a double-deck bus that could take the maximum number of passengers for touring around cities.
Konrad Auwärter's design for the NH22 model had a low-frame front axle with forward-mounted steering gear that could permit a low, flat floor for easy passage for elderly passengers. This bus could seat 67 passengers and featured a large luggage compartment, a kitchen, and a WC on board.
The design, called SKYLINER*, was an immediate hit, and they produced these buses for nearly 20 years with 3 manufacturing facilities. Over 4000 units were built.
