First presented as a concept car at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz who is the brand owner of Maybach introduced their first production vehicle in 2002.
Its launch was simply stunning. On 26th June 2002 the car encased inside a glass cube was transported to the USA aboard the ship Queen Elizabeth 2 that sailed from Southampton, UK. When the ship arrived in New York on 2nd July the media was already waiting. While guns sounded from nearby motorboats, the encased Maybach 62 was lifted off from the ship with a helicopter. When it was brought down, the car was driven to the Regent Hotel in Wall Street where it was presented to the media and the public.
The Maybach 57 and the 62 are essentially same cars, but the 62 is slightly longer to be driven by a chauffeur. Ultimate luxury that it offers, the Maybach 62 has the following features,
- interior air filter
- leather-wrapped steering wheel
- 21 speaker premium sound system
- front and rear seat massage
- 18 step power front seats
- 14 step power rear seats
- iPod adapter
- wireless cell phone link
- heated front & rear seats
- wireless headphones
With a specially developed 5.5-litre twin-turbo V12 engine the Maybach 62 was supposed to offer the best in luxury.
