Strich 8 (in English – stroke 8) was the successor to the Mercedes W123 series. At one time sales of this model was so high that it even displaced the sales figures of both Volkswagen’s Beetle and the Golf.
Both the models i.e. W114 having a 6-cylinder engine and W115 with a 4-cylinder engine were labelled "/8" as Mercedes considered them to the New Generation models making an appearance in the year 196'8'.
Sales peaked to over 2 million (20 lakh) units and it is rumoured that this model outsold all other models that Mercedes-Benz made since WWII. Launched in the winter of 1976 this car was most favourite among the taxi drivers. Some can see these even today in countries as distant as Mauritania, Senegal where they are used to transport people and goods across different towns.
With a 2 litre petrol engine, this model produced 94 bhp and go up to 160 km/hr.
