Built and designated as the L4500, these were later renamed as L312 series of trucks by Mercedes-Benz from 1954.
Developed by a German firm called Klosterfrau Healthcare Group, their product Melissengeist is a variation of Carmelite Water (an extract of lemon balm) and used in combination with several other herbs & oils (cardamom, cinnamon, gentian and ginger) and mixed in a 66% ethanol solution. From the time it was introduced in Germany during the beginning of the 19th century, this solution until this day is used in treating a vast range of ailments.
It was in the mid-fifties when its owners went to a firm owned by Heinrich Buhne of Berlin to build a unique display truck. It was a period when mobile showrooms were the fad and many firms used them to advertise their product in rural communities and across large cities.
With glass on both sides of the trailer bus, the MELISANA (as it was known) went on a trip to Spain to showcase the product. This roadshow in 1965 created quite a stir among the public with the bus lights that lit the road when it travelled and stopped.
