Murat Günak a Turkish and the former head of the Volkswagen Design Bureau, designed this car in 1989 with the first prototype appearing in 1990.
This compact executive sedan brought the volumes that Mercedes-Benz was looking for. Nearly 2 million of them were built between 1994-2000. and produced in Germany, South Africa, Egypt, Vietnam, Mexico, and Thailand.
Mercedes-Benz introduced the C220 Estate model in 1996 and designated it as the T model (T stands for the German word tourenwagen which means a touring car).
