A car that was designed in close cooperation with the tyre company DUNLOP, the Mercedes-Benz 540K Stromlinienwagen was intended to be raced between Germany and Italy, but World War II that began stopped it from completing that historic trip. With a 5.4 litre, 180 hp engine, this car could do about 190 km/hr in 1938.
The famous 3-point star of Mercedes was done away with an emblem that was painted on top of the bonnet, the reason ascribed by its designer was that "that small star obstructs the airflow of this aerodynamic car".
After the war ended the Americans who had entered Berlin started using this car after painting it military green before it was handed over to DUNLOP. After passage of some time, the original car was returned to Daimler-Benz who restored and preserved this car. Only one car exists.
