It was in the year 1935, King Ghazi of Iraq who was visiting an auto exhibition at Barcelona asked Mercedes-Benz to make a special car for him. The car exhibited during the show had a 2.9 litre engine and this he found quite small. So representatives of Mercedes-Benz promised to give a high powered car. They soon commissioned the German coachbuilder to build a special limousine for their customer using a 5.4 litre engine.
So the Mercedes-Benz sports cabriolet 540K made by Erdmann & Rossi bearing serial #2698 made on 5 December 1935, engine serial #123705 was shipped to the king. The original car was painted in cream colour and had a green fabric hood.
King Ghazi who was a high speed driver died racing one of his sports car in 1939.
After Saddam Hussein took over control of Iraq, King Ghazi’s possessions became his and so were his cars. This Mercedes was repainted in silver colour and given a blue coloured hood.
After the Gulf war most thought that this car must have been destroyed during the bombings but it did not happen so. The car was located several floors below the basement and it was quietly moved in to Jordan.
