Manufactured during the beginning of the 1970s right until 1980, the W116 series of cars were the first of the new ‘S’ Class (Klasse, in German) that Mercedes-Benz launched. It was meant to offer a brand that gave the ultimate pleasure in driving as well as enjoying a chauffeur driven ride. The ‘S’ meant the Sonderklasse (special class, in German).

The 6.9 had several first in its class such as hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension system (a Citroen developed technology from the sixties) which enabled the car to travel at speeds across any surface lessening the effects of a rough ride to the occupant.
