This was a creation of one of the greatest designers of Mercedes-Benz, Friedrich Geiger, who earlier designed the Mercedes-Benz 500K, Mercedes-Benz 540K, and the post-war Mercedes-Benz 300SL.
A super luxury model, the W116, was one of the first models to be labelled (later) as S-Class. Under the bonnet, several types of engine configurations were provided, i.e., from 2.8-litre up to 6.9-litre (depending on model variant). Each engine had a Bosch-made Jetronic fuel injection. The W116 had coil spring suspension, an anti-roll bar, and disc brakes on the rear wheels.
First produced in 1973, this model was manufactured until 1980. Over 1.20 lakh (120,000) units of this 280 S model with a 2.8-litre engine were produced.
