In the summer of 1977, Mercedes-Benz rolled out with a minibus that also came in many variants such as a cargo carrier. Labelled T1, they came with various model numbers such as 207 D, 208, 208 D, 307 D and 308 depending upon the payload capacity. For example, the 207D would carry up to 2550 kg while the 208 up to 2800 kg.
This model was brought out to compete against the likes of then-popular Ford Transit and the Volkswagen LT. For almost 18 years nearly a million vehicles were produced making it one of the most successful commercial vehicles for Mercedes.
In India, Force Motors entered into a technical collaboration to make the T1 in India at Pithampur, near Indore. Since 1987 they are being produced and still continue to be made. This brand is well known in India as the 'Tempo Traveller'.
