A 17-yr old lad, Martin Varrone happened to be working as a delivery boy at a cola factory in Palermo, Argentina. He also happened to deliver crates of soft drinks to legendary Argentinian car racing driver, Juan Manuel Fangio who was the dealer for Mercedes-Benz models, in Argentina. Over a period of time, as his visits to Fangio increase, there developed a bond between the two. This was in 1987.
This boy grew older and after few years started a small transportation business. Meanwhile Fangio, sold trucks to Varrone as he was enlarging his fleet. During one of his trips to pick up a new truck, he noticed an old Mercedes 170 D sitting in one corner of Fangio’s workplace. It was filled with soil, rusty spares and was rotting. After enquiring, he learnt that it is a very old truck that his idol had used as a support vehicle when Fangio started his automobile dealership. He convinced the (then) director of Fangio’s firm to hand it over to him as he wanted to get it restored.
To add full authenticity to his restoration attempt, Varrone, tried to hunt the driver who had used this vehicle. He found the driver Fernando, who further revealed this van's usage and the rest of the story. This model was finally restored and today sits in a museum.
This scale model is an exact rendition of the same.
