A large sized grand touring the car, this car came at a time during Hitler who took the lead to construct highways (autobahn in German) that connected entire Germany. Hitler’s vision was that Germany can progress in the industrial age only if highways are wider and vehicles can move at top speeds so that goods can be transported faster. These autobahns also offered an alternative to the existing rail network.
The W29 or the Mercedes 500K was built for just 2 years between 1934 and 1936. Only 342 cars were produced and one of the highway cruiser variant was labelled the Autobahnkurier. Only six of these car model was produced.
It was in 1936 that Mercedes introduced a shorter wheelbase chassis and designated this car as the Mercedes 540 K Roadster Special. Only 32 were built.
One of her owners was famous Marshall Hermann Goering who painted his car in his favourite ‘sky-blue’ and travelled extensively on this on his way to work. His car was nicknamed “Blue Goose”.
