Designed by the trio of Gordon Coppuck, John Barnard, and Ray Stokoe, the McLaren M23 was powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0-litre V8 engine. This model was brought out after the McLaren M19C was phased out. A total of 13 cars were built using Hewland FG400n manual transmission gear between 1973 and 1978.
Notable drivers who drove this car included James Hunt, who won the race at the Nurburgring circuit of the German GP. In the same race held on August 1, 1976, German Jochen Mass, driving this Marlboro-sponsored car, took the third spot to finish behind Jody Scheckter, who was driving the six-wheel Tyrrell.
