This was Mazda’s first car, a microcar with a 360 cc V-twin engine that was 2-door with seats for four occupants.
Launched to the public on 28th May, 1960, this car could run up to 85 km/hr and came with a 4-speed manual transmission and one that came with a torque convertor (a device that transmits or multiplies torque generated by an engine). The car appealed so much to the public that in the very first week it received over 4000 bookings and in little over three months nearly 2000 units were being sold every month.
There were several technological firsts that Mazda achieved through this microcar – it came with a 4-stroke engine whose construction used a high percentage of magnesium to keep it light, a 4-wheel independent torsion rubber suspension system that was superior to plain leaf springs.
The Mazda R360 went on to be produced until 1966.
