Evolved from a design earlier provided by Italian design house, Bertone, the Mazda made Luce (in Italian, it means shining light) was modified further by Mazda's own design team in which a perfect A-line^ was achieved that connected the front, centre and the rear pillars.
Besides the rotary Wankel 1.3 litre engine under the hood (Mazda had purchased this rotary engine technology from NSU, Germany in 1965), what was unique about this car was it’s spaciousness, that allowed 6 passengers to sit inside.
The hardtop version with improved engine performance was this Mazda Luce Rotary Coupe that was launched in 1969 and could travel at 190 km/hr.
^ a design term - the line running over the car, from headlight to tail-lamp tracing the car's silhouette
