Ghibli is a type of "shamal" (in Arabic shamal means, desert wind) that blows in the Libyan deserts.
The first Maserati Ghibli was created way back in 1966 as a concept car and was designed by world famous Giorgetto Giugiaro (he also designed the DMC DeLorean, Alfa Romeo’s Alfasud and Alfetta, BMW’s M1 Homage, De Tomasa Mangusta). These were produced until 1973.
The brand then got resurrected after Marcello Gandini re-designed it in 1992. This particular model (internal designation as the Tipo M157) was launched at the 2013 Auto Show in Shanghai.
