Produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant in Belarus (then a part of the USSR), the MAZ 5551 was first produced in 1985*. Production was very slow in the initial years because of a shortage of raw materials (before the break-up of the Soviet Union).
This tipper varinat came out in 1988 with a Yaroslavl Motor Plant (YaMZ) 236M2 engine. Two years later, another variant with the YaMZ 236NE2 engine was offered to customers. These trucks, with a payload capacity of 10 tons, can still be seen plying in Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia.
* a postage stamp for the 1985 model was also released
