The Land Rover Defender evolved out of the original Land Rover series at the beginning of the 1980’s. Today this model still continues to be produced and is known for its ruggedness and its usefulness.
The cigarette brand sponsored Camel Trophy is a competition that tests the endurance of a Land Rover vehicle. The first event was held in Brazil in 1980, and vehicles had to ply through the Amazon jungles and rivers. Later the same was conducted in various parts of the world including Congo, Madagascar, Mongolia, Russia, etc. To celebrate the 10th edition of the trophy, the competition once again took place in Brazil in the year 1989.
The route was very tough as it ran through the Amazon jungles starting from Mato Grasso and ending in Manaus, a distance of 1400 km. during the monsoon. A total of about 500 kms. also had to be traversed through the Amazon River. Nearly 14 teams from around the world participated including teams from the UK, Italy, Brazil to Turkey and Japan.
This scale model is a rendition of the winning Land Rover Defender driven by the Spanish team with drivers Bruno Montalvo & Fernando Murube on the steering. They finished third.
